Gobbling with Thanks

Sleeping in, kids home, the Macys Parade, gorging in the afternoon, must be a traditional Thanksgiving. It's our normal t'day, except that we don't have a crowd this year, so we're giving Diane a much needed break from cooking and going out to eat. Actually, the cooking will be postponed until tomorrow, for Erin's birthday. Twentieth. One score years. Twenty rings on the tree. I suddenly feel a bit older.

The graphic above is a GIF animation I threw together for Thanksgiving 1997. I call it "Evolution of the Turkey Sandwich".

So much to be thankful for. The freedoms we still have, opportunities to work hard and make decent livings, chances to start over when we mess up or life deals us a lousy hand. No matter how shrill the whining of the haters of freedom and all our ancestors fought and died for, in spite of our personal, corporate and political shortcomings, this is the best country on Earth.

So, why not be thankful? Thankfulness goes hand-in-hand with hope and peace. Let's all try to spend more energy being thankful this year. Don't let political talking points tell you how happy or miserable you are. Don't stampede with the thoughtless herd. Figure it out for yourself!

Catch the game! Watch the National Dog Show! Gobble 'til ya wobble! OD on tryptophan ! Have a Thanksgiving to remember, and look forward to the Advent season. God bless y'all!

Scanning for threats

Yep, that's what Diane's win2k pc is doing right now. Has been for about 45 minutes, probably will be for another hour. In SafeMode. Middle J was supposed to be doing some school research yesterday, but found extra time to check out a kid's site and games under Diane's unrestricted proxy access. I'm sure it's purely coincidental, but after the next reboot win2k dies with a blue screen of death because the boot device is unavailable. Won't run in SafeMode, won't do anything. I didn't know they included a BSOD in win2k. How thoughtful.

Not completely trusting AV software, I come home today thinking I'll have to buy a new drive (120GB, $60 after rebates at OfficeMax), rebuild, and salvage whatever's left on the old drive. Never having dealt with a win2k install, I didn't know what to expect. The pleasant suprize was that the win2k setup CD also has a repair option. And it worked! Bones for Bill! (Well, just for today.)

So it boots okay after the repair. Updated Norton, rebooted in SafeMode, and now it's running a full system scan. Which is tiresome to watch, especially when Norton takes about 10 minutes to scan each of the larger cache files of Mozilla. It's all part of the total cost of ownership of a Windows pc. But ya know, this pc has been far less trouble that our 4 year old eMachine running win98.

Might as well blog. So, I've been gone a month because work has been off the chain. I should have known better than to delude myself into thinking the load was leveling off. No, far from it. Everyone has been scrambling to get our collective work out the door, which has crunched my last two week contribution to the effort into a, umm... minus two week period. I just hate being late. And throwing more time at it seems to have had a negative impact, especially for every other part of life.

The insanity level has gotta subside soon. We had one guy taken out on a stretcher about a week ago, with chest pains. The hospital couldn't find anything wrong, so he was back at it a day and a half later. This past Saturday night he suffers a massive heart attack, has permanent heart damage, and is struggling for life at St. Joseph's in Atlanta. Granted, he's a heavy smoker, but the intense stress at work doesn't help. Plus, it sure seems like the doctors missed an early warning. (As sad as this is, it boggles the mind to think that some folks believe socialized medicine would be better.)

Perhaps if the feds ran the medicine show they could get grief counselling for all the distraught left wingers trying to off themselves. C'mon! There's a whole lot more to life than politics. I recall some angst on the right when Bubba won his second term, but get a grip! America always has and alway will go on, unless fringe groups like the extreme far left or the suicidal religious nut-jobs have their way. If a few on the left are so insane with rage that they shoot and burn themselves, is it a stretch to see them targeting the ignorant unteachable religious right wingers in the red states and counties? Scary people. Don't ya just hate intolerance?

And after an hour and a half, Norton's about half done. Ugh. I want my dandelion patch. (No, kids, it's not an herbal medicated bandage... google "Bloom County" "dandelion patch".)

Peace, y'all!
